Shifa

Shifa, which means “Healing” in the Urdu language, is storytelling using personal objects, form, and writing to convey losing one of five senses. The tongue is linked to taste, digestion, language, speech, pleasure, and community through food, conversation, and song. At the age of 26, I lost the use of my tongue due to nerve damage from a routine dental procedure - a wisdom tooth removal. This exhibit lures the viewer to experience this sudden loss and consider how dynamic loss is: Loss of Taste, Loss of Language, Loss of Pleasure, Loss of Trust, Loss of Self.
